Reverend Mother Satyaparami Gurumahn, head of Panauti’s famed Kashivarna Buddha vihar passed away on 26 March at his son Sagar Man Bajracharya’s residence in Dallu, Kathmandu. Gurumahn who was on medication for her kidney malfucntion has been treated at several hospital including National Kidney Center and her son has attended to her for a long period of time. Known as “Panauti gurumahn” for her dedicated Buddhist religious services for the past 25 years, has also attended to the benifit of Buddhists mostly in villages and farer regions than in Kathmandu, which is a comfortable place of service for many monks and nuns. The hundreds of her followers from Kashivarna Vihar and admirers that attended her funeral included members from Gana Mahavihar, Dharmodaya Sabha, Vajracharya Conservation Trust, Ratnakirti Mahavihar, Dathupui Acharya Trust, attested her service to the Buddhist order and society. Dhankuta – The 5th national convention of Newah Dey Daboo, Nepal’s national Forum of Newah community held here last Monday elected Naresh Tamrakar to lead the Forum until the next convention. The convention first ever held outside Kathmandu of Nepal Mandala, was declared open by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”. Naresh Tamrakar, a former Vice President for Eastern Provinces defeated the former General Secretary Naresh Shakya at this convention chaired by Forum’s President Malla K. Sundar. A delegation of Nepal’s native language advocacy group told Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” that referring to KHAS language alone as NEPALI was not fair. The delegation led by Prof. Prem Shanti Tuladhar, the head of Nepal Bhasa Dept of Tribhuwan University, told so in a 17 point demand memorandum handed over to the prime minister at a meeting held on 13th this month at his official Baluwatar residence in Kathmandu against this unfair practice being continued by the government.

While the delegation comprised of Human Right activist leader Padma Ratna Tuladhar and many activists from several communities and organizations, the demands included 1. Federal system must be based on language as well; 2. Mother languages of Nepalese people must be made compulsory in schools and colleges; 3. Referring to KHAS language alone as NEPALI is not fair; 4. Need of establishing multi language universities among other. Acknowledging the memorandum, the Prime Minister was said to have taken the demands positively and added that after Maoists came into power, Gorkhapatra introduced pages in various languages of Nepal. Update Announcement
As we have announced Universal Encoding of Nepal scripts last year, we are pleased to inform you that finally, necessary initiatives have been taken to encode Prachalit and Ranjana while two Unicode fonts are being nearly completed. The Newah is happy to announce that it will be launching its website and release the fonts in October this year in conjunction to the New Year day of the Nepal Samvat 1130. A guide to Nepal script and dictionary is being compiled, which is also to be distributed on the same day free of charge to donors and supporters and participants to the opening ceremony.
